Cooler rocks higher in the mantle are denser than the hotter rocks below them and this is where gravity forces the colder rocks down, as they are heavier.

Convection dominates the thermal conditions in the areas where large amounts of fluids, mostly being melt rocks, exist, and because it controls the transport of heat from the mantle and the fluid outer core. Convection can only occur in liquids, however, the mantl e and Earths crust are solid, and we know th! is due to studies showing S-waves that propel through these areas. This then shows that the rocks move as they are at very high temperatures that are, however, below melting point, and are soft.
